Sanofi breaks ground on Frankfurt insulin API facility

October 22, 2026 · TideMetrix Brief
TideMetrix TakeSanofi has moved ahead with a major investment in European insulin API manufacturing, but the new Frankfurt facility is not expected to reach full production until 2032. The project strengthens Sanofi's captive supply network rather than adding capacity available to outside buyers.

Sanofi broke ground on a new insulin manufacturing facility at its Frankfurt BioCampus on October 19, advancing a project first announced in August 2024.

The facility will have a 36,000 m² footprint, with full insulin active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production targeted for 2032, subject to licensing. The groundbreaking marks the start of construction rather than an immediate expansion of manufacturing supply.

The European Commission approved public support for the project in September 2026, according to Sanofi.

Frankfurt is already a major insulin manufacturing site, with activities spanning API production, filling, device assembly and packaging. The new facility forms part of Sanofi's own production network.

Sanofi has not disclosed quantitative API capacity for the project or how the investment will affect production at its existing facilities.
